Technology and Teaching at Hillcrest
As we progress through the next three months of the school year and look ahead to the 2010-2011 school year students are very engaged in their studies and are focused and well rested after a much deserved spring break.  Over the next couple of months our school will be engaged in discussion with our staff around the use of technology in the classroom.

We have decisions to make regarding what and how much to purchase for our teaching staff and we will be working with our PAC to discuss how best to disbribute fundraising money so that we are making effective use of both school and PAC funds in purchasing technology.

Around this decision process also involves the use of technology as a teaching tool.  We currently have two functioning computer labs as well as a functioning computer lab in our library.  In addition to these more traditional forms of technology we have some teachers immersed in using student supplied lap tops and i-pod touches to research topics and create presentations.

As a school we are looking towards providing our teachers with more technology for them in the form of laptop computers and LCD projectors so that new and evolving on line teaching tools can be accessed and used by more of our teaching staff in real time.

There are literally endless possibilites to use digital learning in classrooms whether it be in the form of using You-Tube clips as part of a lesson, or using google documents or glogster to create and share projects among students.  There are teachers on our staff who have suggested and encouraged parents to supply laptop computers to their students as a learning tool and as we progress towards implementing more technology into our school this may one of a few viable ways to do this.

One common thread exists with technology; our students use it effortlessly and it has become part of their daily lives.  Our students are comfortable with it and as a school community we must try our best to support them.
Hillcrest Happenings - Mr. Hewlett
I have now spent a full two months at Hillcrest Middle School and I must spend a few moments sharing my initial thoughts and perceptions regarding our learning community.

Our staff is very committed to the students in our community.  There are literally countless opportunities every week for our students to engage themselves in clubs, sports and activities at our school and this is directly attributable to the fabulous staff and to the students themselves for trying new things

We recently completed a very successful explorations night for students and parents in our community.  Each participating family went through a full rotation of all four explorations (Art, Tech Ed, Dramus, Home Ec.) and gave our families a taste (literally) of a child's year in explorations.

Finally, i have been very impressed with the general behavior of the learners in our community.  There is a high level of respect among students for our school and for each other.

Please stay tuned for future blogs and discussion.  It his my hope that through the regular use of my Blog that our learning community will learn more about me, that i can impart information on education to people, and that information about are school can be provided.
